The School of Making Thinking (SMT) is now accepting proposals for artists and thinkers to teach a virtual class for our Fall 2020 Semester in partnership with Abrons Arts Center (a performing and visual arts center in the Lower East Side). SMT classes seek to bring rigorous thinking into conversation with experimental pedagogies by combining intellectual practices (reading texts, writing, dialogue, etc.) with artistic practices (dance, theater, design, film, etc). Please see past courses for examples.
Proposals are due Wednesday July 29th 2020. Proposals should be emailed to [email protected] and should include in the subject line "2020 Fall Proposal".
Specifications:
•Courses will run for 5 consecutive weeks during one of two cycles: Cycle 1, Sept 14 – Oct 12th, and Cycle 2 Oct 19 – Nov 16.
•Each class in a course will meet once a week for 2 hours.
•We encourage courses to be held on weekday evenings from 7-9pm EST.
•Teacher are paid $500 for their course ($50/hour for 10 teaching hours / cycle)
•Courses cost (for students) will run at a discounted rate of $100 for a 5 week course [plus a $25 registration fee]
•Classes will be held online. While Abrons will provide a professional zoom account you are welcome to use, we also encourage other innovative platforms and methodologies that foster togetherness in lieu of not being together in person.
•IMPORTANT. Because SMT does not have the budget to hire a marketing team for these courses, it is the teacher’s responsibility to be able to draw a class size of at least 5 students in order for a course to run. If a course does not meet this class size minimum by the 1st day of class, the class will be cancelled.
Proposal guidelines:
•Your CV
•Bio (max 200 words)
•A title for the course
•A brief description of the course. Please make sure the description includes how the course will run (pedagogy, activities, etc.) and what virtual teaching platform it will utilize (max 200 words)
•A 1-3 sentence abbreviated description of the course
•Specify which weekday evenings would work for you to have the class and which cycle(s) you are available for your class to run. If you have an alternative proposal for the day/times of our course, please let us know here.
•2-3 images to advertise your class (including image credit if applicable)
•A write-up that details your ability to draw 5+ students to your course. This would ideally include examples of successful marketing for past events or courses, AND a detailed marketing plan for your SMT class. (max 200 words)
