The School of Making Thinking (SMT) is now accepting proposals for artists and thinkers to teach a class for our Fall 2023 workshops in partnership with Abrons Arts Center, a performing and visual arts center in the Lower East Side of NYC. Our fall semester will be both in person and online – please indicate in your proposal whether you would like to host the class at Abrons in person or online. Typically we get more proposals for online classes, so if you are based in New York City, consider submitting an in-person proposal.
SMT classes are an opportunity for artists to bring others into their thinking and making practices through experimental pedagogies. We are looking for pedagogically compelling proposals that depart from traditional classroom approaches, even within a specific field. A strong proposal delineates what students come away from your class with: a new skill, work, framework, or approach to arts practice, and its relevance. We look for proposals that bridge disciplines and bring rigorous thinking into conversation with aesthetic, political, and experimental approaches to arts practice. Some previous instructional/facilitation experience is preferable. Please see our Spring 2023 courses for examples, or our archive of past courses.
Proposals can be submitted via our online submission form, and are due Saturday, July 1st at 11:59 PM EST.
SPECIFICATIONS:
Courses will run for 4 consecutive weeks between beginning October 2nd and ending October 27th.

SPECIFICATIONS:
Courses will run for 4 consecutive weeks between beginning October 2nd and ending October 27th.
- Each class in a course will meet once a week for 2 hours.
- Courses will be held on weekday evenings from 6-8pm EST.
- Courses will cap at 20 students
- Teachers are paid $600 for their course ($75/hour for 8 teaching hours).
- Teachers will be paid maximum two weeks after the culmination of the class, via direct deposit.
- Courses cost (for students) $180 for a 4 week course [plus a $25 registration fee]
- Abrons/SMT offers ½ off of tuition for lower income participants and sliding scale tuition rates to Black, Indigenous and Students of Color [registration fee remains $25]. Activating these discounts requires a simple application process and email correspondence with Abrons administrators.
- Classes will be held online OR in person. For online classes, teachers may use their personal Zoom account or The School of Making Thinking’s Zoom account if they prefer. We also encourage other innovative platforms and methodologies that foster togetherness in lieu of not being together in person.
- IMPORTANT: Because we have limited marketing resources for these courses, it is the teacher’s responsibility to be able to draw a class size of at least 5 students in order for a course to run. If a course does not meet this class size minimum by the last day of registration, the class will be canceled.
- Class registration will open August 1st.
- Teacher Orientation is scheduled for Friday, September 22, 5pm EST, on Zoom.
The Class Proposal Form will require:
