The School of Making Thinking (SMT) is now accepting proposals for artists and thinkers to teach a class for our Spring 2023 Semester in partnership with Abrons Arts Center (a performing and visual arts center in the Lower East Side). Our spring semester will take place either in person or online – please indicate in your proposal whether you would like to host the class at Abrons in person or online. SMT classes are an opportunity for artists to bring others into their thinking and making practices through experimental pedagogies. We look for exciting and thoughtful proposals that bridge disciplines and bring rigorous thinking into conversation with aesthetic, political, and experimental approaches to arts practice. Please see our Fall 2022 courses for examples, or our archive of past courses.
Proposals can be submitted via our online submission form, and are due Saturday, January 21st at 11:59 PM EST.
SPECIFICATIONS:
Courses will run for 4 consecutive weeks between beginning April 3rd and ending April 28th.
The Class Proposal Form will require:
•Your CV
•Bio (max 200 words)
•A title for the course
•A brief description of the course. Please make sure the description includes how the course will run (pedagogy, activities, etc.), whether it is in person or online, and what virtual teaching platform it will utilize (max 200 words)
•A 1-3 sentence abbreviated description of the course
•Specify which weekday evenings would work for you to have the class and which cycle(s) you are available for your class to run.
•2-3 images to support your class (including image credit if applicable)
•A write-up that details your ability to draw 6+ students to your course. This would ideally include examples of successful marketing for past events or courses, AND a detailed marketing plan for your SMT class. (max 200 words)

SPECIFICATIONS:
Courses will run for 4 consecutive weeks between beginning April 3rd and ending April 28th.
- Each class in a course will meet once a week for 2 hours.
- Courses will be held on weekday evenings from 6-8pm EST.
- Courses will cap at 20 students
- Teachers are paid $480 for their course ($60/hour for 8 teaching hours).
- Teachers will be paid maximum two weeks after the culmination of the class, via direct deposit.
- Courses cost (for students) $160 for a 4 week course [plus a $25 registration fee]
- Abrons/SMT offers ½ off of tuition for lower income participants and sliding scale tuition rates to BIPOC students [registration fee remains $25]. Activating these discounts requires a simple application process and email correspondence with Abrons administrators.
- Classes will be held online OR in person. For online classes, teachers may use their personal Zoom account or The School of Making Thinking’s Zoom account if they prefer. We also encourage other innovative platforms and methodologies that foster togetherness in lieu of not being together in person.
- IMPORTANT. Because we have limited marketing resources for these courses, it is the teacher’s responsibility to be able to draw a class size of at least 5 students in order for a course to run. If a course does not meet this class size minimum by the 1st day of class, the class will be canceled.
