IN AND OUT OF A RUT: GETTING STUCK AS CREATIVE PRACTICEAs artists we encounter walls of inflexibility, frustration, and unattainable expectation–writer’s block, sticky muscle memory, and dull material. These blocks can be difficult to contend with, as they oppose capitalist cultural notions of productivity and time scarcity. During Call Your Mom’s near 10 years working as a collective, we hit inevitable periods of both high and low inspiration, realizing over and over that getting stuck is not a hindrance, but a condition of being an artist. The course curriculum and CYM’s process are informed by the challenges of virtual collaboration. Stemming from their experience working across time zones, the collective will share exercises, games and research methods that aim to take the doom out of Zoom!
By encountering limitations and cross-media restrictions, participants will play with stuckness, explore common ruts in their practice, and collaborate to form and break restraints. Participants will be asked to experiment with unexpected materials and modes of creation. We especially welcome artists who are in a rut! |
