Poetic Imaginaries of Creative Tunings
Language tunes ideas. This document plays with the ways that linguistic tunings (or modes of expression) afford particular conceptual valences over others. In this spirit, we would like to de-tune from academic-speak in presenting an assortment of possible session activities.
Personalized Tuning Space Each participant will have the opportunity to build a team of willing ‘consultants’ from the group. Together we will create a tuning space, an environment developed specifically to help you attune to your work. The process might involve ritual, intentional design, totem building, deep listening, etc.
Tuning pit Before an orchestra plays their program, they play a tuning song, in a tuning pit. Can we develop our own tuning pit? We can invite each other to tune together to a given material desired to be tuned. “Want to come with me to tune colors? To tune our language? To tune our sight?” Maybe we each develop our own tuning song? An “open mic” concert to showcase all our tuning songs?
Develop a scale/tuning for your practice If your practice had a tuning, what would it be? Think of your practice as a system composed of different elements (like notes, scales, tones). These elements (or others) can be de/re/attuned.
Daily/Morning Tunings Participants are encouraged to propose a short practice or workshop to help attune the group. Possible ideas include a walk in nature wherein we resensitize to the environment, etc.
Score night Everyone spends 10 minutes writing a ~3 minute score. The scores can be for anything (poetic or concrete instructions for a performance, for a conversation, for a movement, for hugging, for hoping, for shaking, for poking, for brushing hair etc). We then randomly select and perform each other’s scores.
Tune the group to your project/practice Everyone develops a methodology for tuning the group to their process/practice. Discover what your tuning is, devise a methodology for attuning the group to the field of resonance in your work. Perhaps a showcase of practice tunings.
Interdisciplinary De/Re/At-tunings How do you tune a body? A spirit? A painting? A practice? Detune musical instruments, making instruments in altered tunings, small/quick writing assignments, flocking, movement.
Clowning Exercises Detune - biokinetic release and “rivering” as ways of detuning from subconscious and retuning to impulse. Witness Tuning - attuning to ones-selves and/or the audience while being witnessed. Arbitrary Tuning - “extensions” or objects are assigned ideas/traits/intensities to attune to.
Nature Walks Paying sensorial attention to the minor and major wonders of our natural surroundings. Resensitizing to nature, learning its languages of sound, of movement.
Psychomagic ‘Fake healing’ style “tune ups”. Slow somatic integration.
Activities where we attune to: ground/plants/body parts, inner ages/selves, another person, objects, emerging group mind, past group minds, plants, imaginary futures, etc!
