HOW TO WRITE A HOROSCOPE

Horoscopes are songs. I think the many moving parts of astrology mirror the many moving parts of music. The class will teach astrology through this lens. Just like anyone can pluck out a melody on a piano, they can also learn to write a horoscope. Both tasks are good for the soul.

The course will teach the basics of planets, signs, houses and aspects in astrology. We will learn these basics using examples of the students in the class, as well as through the charts of their favorite artists. Astrology is the study of light—Indian astrologers call it jyotish which means just that—and we will pay careful attention to the visual aspects of astrology as we learn how the different parts relate to each other. Some of this will require getting up on our feet and moving around the space just like planets do in the sky.

I will also teach a brief history of horoscopes, and share samples from my favorite writers. During the final class, we'll put all the pieces together and write horoscopes for the first time, then compile them into a "mixtape" zine for the class to share.

INSTRUCTORS

Jaime Wright: I am a writer and professional astrologer from New York. Since 2016, I have been engaged in a rich astrological practice giving hundreds of consultations, writing thousands of horoscopes, leading workshops on planetary cycles, and divining for querents at all kinds of events. I am the author of the cult favorite astrology newsletter, moon missives, and write weekly and monthly horoscope columns for an online magazine. In 2023 and 2024, I was the host of the weekly forecast podcast, good fortune. In a past life (my 20's), I was a performance artist and co-created shows as the performance group Carroll Simmons with my friend, David Bernstein. Astrology is a language and art form. Astrology is a vessel that a diviner brings to life like a performer takes on a role, or a painter works with oils, or a ‘cellist plays the strings.
